Wednesday Top 5: Super Bowl MVP

By: Matt Quinn

The Super Bowl is just a few days away and the hype is starting to build. The Chiefs are chasing a three-peat and the Eagles are looking to avenge a loss to these same Chiefs in the Super Bowl just two years ago. There’s tons of playmakers on both sides of the ball for both of these teams. All of which are capable of making one or two game changing type plays. Saquon Barkley has had a near record setting season with over 2,000 yards rushing during the regular season. He could be a name that pops up alot in this one. Either way, we’re sure to see some big time plays. Today, I want to take a look at the 5 guys I believe are most likely to take home the Super Bowl MVP award.

  1. Travis Kelce

Some people might be surprised that Kelce is this low on the list. Though he has slowed down a touch this year, he’s still capable of taking over a game. Patrick Mahomes has great chemistry with Kelce and they’ve both been in this spot before 4 previous times. It would not surprise me at all if Kelce took over the game, most likely in the second half, with some clutch catches to help the Chiefs get the unheard of third title in as many years.

  1. A.J. Brown

The Eagles are no doubt great on the ground but one area I believe they truly have an advantage is at wide receiver. DaVonta Smith is electric for sure and could be a number one receiver on any team in the league. But it’s his counterpart that really should have the Chiefs worried. A.J. Brown is one of the best receivers in the league. His size and incredible catching ability makes him a nightmare for any defense and could be the x factor in possibly stopping the three-peat. I could absolutely see him making some big plays with the Chiefs defense probably focusing alot on Saquon Barkley, opening up the passing game a bit. Don’t be surprised if that happens and you start hearing A.J. Brown’s name being called an awful lot as the game goes on.

  1. Jalen Hurts

Speaking of the Eagles passing game, let’s talk about the guy doing the throwing. Jalen Hurts has been great this season and is coming off of a performance in which he threw a touchdown and ran for 3 more. He’s been very good at taking care of the football this year also, which is a key component in a game like this. The teams that turn the ball over, especially in the Super Bowl, don’t usually leave games happy. The last time Jalen Hurts played in the Super Bowl was two years ago and he was certainly not the reason the Eagles came up short. He was incredible that night and almost certainly would have won Super Bowl MVP had they won that game. I believe he still has that in him and could absolutely take it home this year.

  1. Saquon Barkley

It would be foolish to not have this guy on this list. I could go on and on about how great Saquon has been this year. He has elevated an already stacked Eagles team to the best in the NFC and has shown all year and throughout these playoffs that he can absolutely shred a defense and demoralize a team. Many times this year the Eagles have been able to control the ball and play keep away with their incredible run game. Saquon is a huge part of that and this will be his first ever Super Bowl. An already motivated Saquon Barkley on a stage like the Super Bowl with the league’s best offensive line backing him up is a recipe for a big time performance yet again.

  1. Patrick Mahomes

Of course number one is Mahomes. He’s the straw that stirs the drink in Kansas City and has been since he became the starter seven years ago. Love him or hate him, Mahomes is the best in the league and very rarely makes mistakes. It’s why he has three rings already and has a chance to be the first Quarterback in NFL History to win three straight Super Bowls. We’ve seen it time and time again that if there is anybody that can take over any game at any point, it’s Mahomes. Any mistake that the Eagles might make, it will almost 100% be taken advantage of by Mahomes. All it takes is one mistake and Mahomes will end your season. He’s that good. Because of that, he’s the player that I believe is most likely to take home the MVP award on Sunday.

So there you have it. Every player on this list can absolutely win the award and though there are more Eagles players on this list, it doesn’t mean I’m necessarily saying the Chiefs are going to win. And there are other players not mentioned that could potentially surprise some people and win it. It’ll be exciting to see it all play out regardless and it should be a fun one to watch.
